Program Overview

The SportsMedicine department within RU Athletics is comprised of athletic trainers and physicians who are responsible for the medical care of the student-athletes of the 19 intercollegiate teams.  This group of individuals works together in the prevention, treatment, management, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses.

Athletic Training Staff

The Athletic Training staff, certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification, and licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia, work out of two athletic training rooms, one in the Dedmon Center and one in Cupp Stadium.  They provide medical coverage for the student-athletes throughout the day, whether in the athletic training room, or at the teams’ practices and games.  Various other responsibilities include:  travel with teams; supervision, education, and evaluation of students enrolled in the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP); implementation of the athletic department’s drug-testing program; and education of student-athletes and coaches in numerous health-related areas.

Outside Medical Personnel

The Athletic Training program could not operate without the assistance of medical personnel outside of the university.  The addition of two physicians’ weekly visits to the athletic training room has significantly enhanced the program.  Dr. Scott Kincaid, a local physician specializing in family medicine, serves as the Team Physician.  He visits the athletic training room on a weekly basis to examine and treat the sick and injured student-athletes (and sometimes coaches!).  He also provides medical assistance at various intercollegiate contests.  Dr. Jacquie Keats, a chiropractor who operates her own practice in Radford (Keats Family & Sports Chiropractic), also volunteers her services one day a week during the Fall and Spring semesters.  Many other medical professionals assist the athletic training staff in a multitude of ways.  Doctors Mike Barry, Kerry Donnelly, Ken Gray, Dan Kelly, Scott Mann, Robert Solomon, Scott Urch, Glenn Young, and nurse practitioner Judy Cox, are those who unselfishly give of their time to help.   Sometimes it is by making time in the already fully scheduled day, or after hours, on a weekend, or on a day off, to see a sick or injured student-athlete!  The office staffs at their respective clinics are a big part of this successful program too, because without them, appointments, x-rays, MRI’s and other special tests wouldn’t get scheduled, bills and insurance wouldn’t get filed, and office notes wouldn’t get to the athletic trainers.  It takes an extra effort from everyone in the program, but everyone does it, for the benefit of the student-athletes.

Athletic Training Faculty

Two other athletic trainers who are on RU’s ESHE department faculty, offer their assistance in athletic training coverage of events.  Dr. Angela Mickle is the ATEP director.  She developed that program which gained national accreditation in 2004.  Dr. Michael Moore is the ATEP clinical coordinator.  Many may recognize this young man from his days at RU as either a student or as an assistant athletic trainer.
