RADFORD, Va. – Despite sophomore Katie Shaffer (Virginia beach, Va./Oceanside) breaking her own school record on the one-meter board, the Radford University women’s swimming and diving team fell to College of Charleston 138.50-91.50 in their season opener Friday at the Dedmon Center.

Shaffer recorded a score of 202.64, which broke her previous school record in the one-meter by 11 points. Along with her new school standard, Shaffer also placed first on the three-meter board with a score of 222.60. Shaffer’s diving teammate, Danielle Moore (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) placed fourth in both events in her first-ever collegiate meet.

“I am so proud of Danielle and Katie,” said diving coach Kevin Schwenk. “They both work extremely hard in practice and it showed during this afternoon’s meet,” commented Schwenk.

Emily Turner (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Technical) out touched all competitors in the 200-yard individual medley to win her first collegiate race with a time of 2:13.03.  Turner's time places her third on the all-time top 10 performers in the 200-yard individual medley.

The quartet of Turner, Cecilia de la Garza (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg), Erica Kappert (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) and Mandy Smith (Annandale, Va./Falls Church) finished second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:58.24.

The Highlanders will back in action Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. when they face Randolph-Macon.
