ATLANTA – Three top-five performances, led by junior Olajuwon Jones’ (Indianapolis, Ind./Speedway) new school 400m dash record, highlighted Radford track & field’s weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational, with competition concluding Saturday.
Jones shattered the program’s 400m time for the third straight meet, setting the bar at 46.51, to finish fourth among collegiate competitors and meeting the NCAA Regional qualifying standard.
Other top performances for the Highlanders over the weekend included senior Matt Dobson’s (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) third-place mark among collegiate competitors in the hammer throw at 59.38m (194-10), setting a new career-best. Dobson, who previously qualified for regional competition at the 2009 Big South outdoor championships, topped the regional mark once again.
Freshman Aimee Veatch (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) did likewise on the women’s side, as the 2009 Big South hammer throw champion hit a distance of 56.56m (185-07) to finish fourth.
Junior Raschad Kelso (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) finished the 200m dash in a time of 21.41, fourth-best among collegiate competitors.
Jones, Dobson, Veatch and Kelso are among the Radford athletes competing at the 2009 NCAA East Regionals in Greensboro, N.C. on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University May 29-30. A complete list of competitors will be available on radfordathletics.com later this week.
