Aimee Veatch’s (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) sixth-place performance in the women’s hammer throw highlighted Radford track & field’s first day of competition at the 2009 NCAA East Regionals at North Carolina A&T’s Irwin Belk Track on Friday.
Veatch, who came in ranked 12th in the East Region, posted Radford’s best showing of the day with her 55.32m toss (181-06). The 2009 Big South hammer throw champion and league freshman of the year was one of two freshmen to finish in the top-10.
Junior Olajuwon Jones (Indianapolis, Ind./Speedway) was 18th in the men’s 400m preliminaries with his time of 47.25. Junior Raschad Kelso (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) finished 19th in the 200m preliminaries at 21.50.
Sophomore Britney Whittaker (Pilot, Va./Radford) clocked a time of 2:18.96 in the women’s 800m preliminaries.
Radford closes out Regional competition Saturday (May 30). Senior Matt Dobson (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) will compete in the men’s hammer throw at 11 a.m., and Jones, Kelso, senior Jovan Coker (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) and freshman Ronquis Posey (Emporia, Va./Brunswick) will run the 4x400m relay at approximately 8:20 p.m.
