Women's Tennis Opens Up Fall Season at JMU Invitational

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Radford women’s tennis team opened up its 2009 fall season at the James Madison Invitational this weekend with three Highlanders reaching the finals in their respective brackets.
The flight D singles final was all Highlanders, as sophomores Sarah Tegner (Sweden/Karlsbergs Gymnasium) and Emerald Lauzon (Bristol, Va. /John S Battle) cruised to the finals by defeating their opponents in straight sets. Tegner then dispatched Lauzon by the score of 7-5, 6-3 to win her first tournament of the season.
Mirna Matic (Umag, Croatia/Vladmir Gortan Buje) reached the semifinals also. Matic reached the semifinals by defeating Rebecca Erickson of James Madison 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 and Nasim Moadab of Longwood 6-0, 6-0. In the finals of Flight C Matic fell to Michelle Nguyen in straight sets.
In other singles action, Ivana Tomaic (Zagreb, Croatia/Third Gymnasium) went 2-1 to finish third in Flight B.
In doubles action, the team of Lauzon and Tegner defeated a resilient Longwood team to capture third place by the score of 9-8. Tomaic and Matic finished with a 2-1 record as they overwhelmed Big South foe Liberty, 8-4
The women’s tennis team heads to Maryland next weekend for the Maryland Invitational.
