Women's Golf Comes Home Eighth at UNCG Starmount Fall Classic

The Radford women’s golf team carded a final round 330 Tuesday to finish eighth in the 2009 UNCG Starmount Fall Classic. The three-day / 54-hole event hosted by UNC Greensboro was played on the Par 71, 6,265-yard Starmount Forest layout.

Senior Megan Leineweber (Salisbury, Md. / Parkside) led the way for the Highlanders on the individual leaderboard at 231 (76-74-81), which put her in a tie for 20th. Sophomore Jade Okamoto (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Marina) continued her consistent play finishing four back of Leineweber.

Hannah Coles (Birmingham, England / The Coleshill School) came home in 49th, while Amy McCollum (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford) and Maggie Watts (Paris, Ky. / Paris) concluded the annual event outside the top 50.

Despite carding a seven-over 78 Tuesday, Campbell’s Mary Mattson claimed individual medalists by three strokes over her fellow teammate Teresa Arocena, who finished at 221 (74-75-72) as an individual.

For the third consecutive day, the Fighting Camels finished with the low round to win their 60th team title in school history. Campbell finished seven strokes ahead of host UNCG (894) and 21 clear of third-place UNC Wilmington.

Radford will enjoy a lengthy break before continuing its fall slate at the Regents Glen Classic Oct. 19-20 in York, Pa.
