Profile:Radford University men’s soccer alumnus Chris Barrett joined the Highlander men’s soccer program in the Fall of 2006 as a Volunteer Assistant and was promoted to the full-time First Assistant in the Fall of 2007. Barrett, a former RU goalkeeper, severs as the netminders coach for the Highlanders. He also assists in several other aspects of the program, including practice and game preparation, scouting and recruiting, scheduling and travel coordination. He is in his second stint as a Radford assistant, having worked for coach Spencer Smith for three years from 1995-1998. In his first season back with the Highlanders, Barrett coached RU starting keeper Zach Roszel, then a newcomer to the team, to a successful season and a spot on the Big South All-Conference Second Team. In addition to his experiences at Radford, Barrett brings a wealth of experience in soccer instruction. Prior to re-joining the Highlanders program, Barrett served as an Assistant Coach and Goalkeeper Trainer at UNC Wilmington. He helped lead the Seahawks to a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Semifinal. He also worked with youth soccer in Wilmington, serving as a Staff Coach for the Cape Fear Soccer Association and the Director of Coaching and Soccer Operations for the Port City Soccer Club. Barrett spent the two years prior to his move to Wilmington as the Youth Academy Director at Rockdale Youth Soccer Association in Conyers, Ga. Before that, he spent four years as the Co-Director and Director of Player Development for the Greenville Futbol Club in Greenville, S.C. While there he coached and developed current RU standout Devan Cooley and RU alum and former All-Big South member Taylor Rowe. Barrett also worked with the Greenville Lions pro soccer club, serving as an Assistant Coach and Goalkeeper Trainer for the USL Division 3 team. He helped lead them to a National Final during his three years there. Barrett also worked for West Virginia as an Assistant Coach, helping to lead the Mountaineers to a winning season and a berth in the Big East Conference. The WVU goalkeeper, who Barrett was responsible for training, was named to the All-Big East Team. During his first stint as a Radford assistant, Barrett also volunteered as the goalkeepers coach for the Highlander women’s program. He also has been the head varsity coach at nearby Christiansburg High School and Greenville (S.C.) High School an he’s worked with the Olympic Development Program (ODP) as a State-level coach in Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina and Georgia. Barrett, who played for RU from 1991-1995, served as team captain in 1993 and 1994 and was voted All-Big South in 1994. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Leisure Services from Radford in 1996. He is currently working towards a teaching certificate in Physical and Health Education.
