Profile:Rick Hall, who brings a wealth of coaching experience to Radford, joined the Highlander program in April of 2007 after four years of working with RU head coach Brad Greenberg at Virginia Tech. Greenberg made Hall the first assistant coach he hired after joining the Highlander program. Hall’s duties at Radford include assisting with all aspects of the program, including recruiting, practice and game preparation and opponents scouting. Hall spent the previous four seasons with Virginia Tech men’s basketball, including the last three as Director of Men’s Basketball Operations. Hall had wide-ranging duties with Virginia Tech, including assisting with on-campus recruiting and overseeing the Hokies’ video system. He also served as camp director for Seth Greenberg Basketball Camps. Hall joined the Hokies after serving as the head boys basketball coach at William Fleming High School for two years. In that time, he led the program to the regional state tournament. It was his second stint with the Colonels, as he had been an assistant coach with the school in the 1988-89 season, when they reached the state semifinals. While working for Flemming, he also served as a radio color commentator for the NBDL’s Roanoke Dazzle. Before returning to Virginia, Hall coached in the Continental Basketball Association with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the Oklahoma City Cavalry and the Shreveport Storm from 1994 to 1999. In those five years, 20 players that he coached were called up by the NBA. He spent the 1994-95 season in Shreveport as an assistant coach and director of player personnel, and was promoted to head coach for the 1995-96 season. Hall coached in the CBA finals as an assistant during his last three CBA seasons, winning one championship in 1997 with Oklahoma City. Hall also brings with him knowledge of the Big South Conference, having served as an assistant at Big South rival Coastal Carolina in 1993-94. He also was an assistant at nearby Roanoke College from 1989-93. Hall began his coaching in 1983, spending five years as an assistant at Roanoke’s Cave Spring High School before his first stint at William Fleming. Hall played basketball for Ferrum Junior College, for the 1978-79 season. He then transferred to Virginia Tech, joining the Hokies on a football scholarship and earning a varsity letter in 1979. Hall excelled in three sports, football, basketball and track as a student-athlete at Cave Spring High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing education from Virginia Tech in 1983. Hall resides in Christiansburg with his wife, the former Cherri Shortt, whom he married last summer. |
